CARMACAL finalist UNWTO Innovation award
Friday, December 2, 2016
CARMACAL, the carbon calculator developed under the CARMATOP project
, is one of three finalists for the 2017 UNWTO Award for Innovation in Research and Technology. CARMACAL
enables travel organisations detailed carbon footprinting of their travel packages.
139 submissions from 55 countries were received for the World Tourism Organization’s four innovation award categories. The Winners and Runners-Up will be unveiled and awarded on the occasion of the 13th UNWTO Awards Ceremony & Gala Dinner on 18 January 2017, IFEMA, Madrid, Spain. Earlier this year, CARMACAL won the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) Tourism for Tomorrow Innovation Award 2016
The online calculator not only measures flight emissions, but also those of 20 other transport modes, more than half a million accommodations, a range of activities, etcetera, enabling the exact calculation of all emissions of a travel package. Dutch tour operators – members of Dutch Association of Travel Agents and Tour operators ANVR – have already started working with CARMACAL. The calculator’s development was a close cooperation between NHTV’s Centre for Sustainable Tourism and Transport (CSTT), ANVR, HZ University of Applied Sciences, Climate Neutral Group, ECEAT, iBuildings, and more than 10 tour operators.
Paul Peeters, Associate Professor Sustainable Tourism and Transport: “It is quite clear that CARMACAL users are part of a ‘winning team’! This is another encouragement for frontrunners in the tourism industry engaging with climate change.”
