Two NHTV CSTT papers published in the Journal of Sustainable Tourism

Tuesday, April 13, 2010

NHTV CSTT members have (co-)authored two papers in a special issue of the Journal of Sustainable Tourism on tourism adaptation to climate change and climate policy (Vol. 18, No. 3, April 2010).

The first article, titled “Antarctic cruise tourism: the paradoxes of ambassadorship, “last chance tourism” and greenhouse gas emissions”, was written by Eke Eijgelaar, Carla Thaper and Paul Peeters. The paper examines a paradoxical issue in tourism’s adaptation to climate change and emissions reduction demands. Operators increasingly take tourists to destinations threatened by climate change, with Antarctica and other polar regions as favourites and cruise ship and aircraft as main transport modes (read the full abstract on our publications page; see the link below). Carla Thaper recently graduated at NHTV with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Tourism Management. Her thesis “Impact analysis of climate tourism to the Antarctic and Arctic” (2009) was commissioned by CSTT and initiated this paper. Carla is now taking a Master programme in marketing at the University of Lugano, Switzerland.

The second article, “Can tourism deliver its “aspirational” greenhouse gas emission reduction targets?”, was written by Daniel Scott (University of Waterloo, Canada), Paul Peeters and Stefan Gössling (Lund University, Kalmar, Sweden). It examines the greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reduction targets postulated by a range of organizations seeking to reduce the consequences of global climate change and how, or if, the global tourism sector can achieve its share of those targets.
